{television} the l word; season one (2004)

It's grrrl power all the way in the first season of this controversial Showtime series about a close-knit group of lesbians (the "L" in L Word). Follow all the thrilling hook-ups and painful break-ups of Bette (Jennifer Beals), Dana (Erin Daniels), Jenny (Mia Kirshner), Marina (Karina Lombard), Alice (Leisha Hailey), Tina (Laurel Holloman), Shane (Katherine Moennig) and Kit (Pam Grier), who are proud to live life out of the closet.

ireviewnetflix.com rating: **** This is such a good show. Not great, but a very good show. I really enjoy it, but I don't love it. It is almost better than Queer As Folk, but the fact that they're lesbians and I'm gay leaves somewhat of a disconnect sometimes with some of the subject matter. Like, for instance, I could do without all the lesbian sex, but I could have also done without all the gay sex scenes in Queer As Folk. What can I say? I guess I'm a prude. Aside from that, the cast is fabulous, the writing is fabulous, and the show is fabulous. I gave it four stars because it's rare to get gay themed content this good.
