{television} all in the family; season six (1975)

With Gloria (Sally Struthers) pregnant and Archie (Carroll O'Connor) on a doctor-ordered diet, waistlines may be shifting in the sixth season of this landmark comedy, but the Bunkers remain their irascible, inimitable selves. In other action, Edith (Jean Stapleton) develops an independent streak; Mike (Rob Reiner) declares "Independence Day" from Archie ... a bit prematurely; and the Bunker clan welcomes a new member.

ireviewnetflix.com rating: *** I finally realized why All In The Family has always been a show that I just enjoyed, but never loved. The Archie/Michael fights get on my nerves. And Gloria gets on my nerves. But Edith and Archie are comic gold. Jean Stapleton as Edith is one of my favorite television characters. This season features one of the favorite episodes of the entire series: "Archie the Hero," featuring Beverly LaSalle, a, as she puts it "female impersonator." She appears again in a great episode in the seventh season, and a very sad episode in the eighth season that still makes me cry.
