{television} anything but love; seasons one and two (1989)

Hannah Miller (Jamie Lee Curtis) is an aspiring writer who's been given a chance to work for a magazine by her new friend Marty Gold (Richard Lewis). First friends and now co-workers, Hannah and Marty struggle poorly to conceal their mutual attraction. What unfolds is classic television comedy. In the style of Hepburn and Tracy, Curtis and Lewis mix slapstick with sophisticated wit as they navigate the waters of an interoffice romance.

ireviewnetflix.com rating: **** This one was an interesting one. I had never even heard of or seen this show. I didn't even know Jamie Lee Curtis had ever done television (this was her first and only sitcom) and I didn't know that Richard Lewis had a sitcom. The chemistry between Lewis and Curtis at first wasn't that great and the writing wasn't that great either. I just didn't care about them and didn't really care if they ended up together or not. Also, the supporting characters in the first season weren't that great either. The first season (which was only six episode) were pretty horrible. I'm surprised the show was given a second chance, but after a complete retooling, it got drastically better. Thank god for Peter Noah. Things really turned around in the second season. After getting rid of the horrible supporting cast members (especially Sandy Faison who was perfectly ghastly as fashion and gossip writer Pamela Peyton-Finch) and bringing on a new supporting cast, things turned around. However, I was glad they kept Richard Frank as executive assistant Jules "Julie" Bennett. I especially enjoyed the addition of Joseph Maher as entertainment critic Brian Alquist and Ann Magnuson as hip, new editor Catherine Hughes. Don't watch the first six episode, just go straight to the second season and you won't be disappointed.
