{television} wkrp in cincinatti (1978)

When ambitious program director Andy Travis (Gary Sandy) arrives at WKRP, he shakes things up at the sleepy radio station by changing to a rock format, in spite of opposition from the station owner and the Lawrence Welk fan base. Hip DJs Dr. Johnny Fever (Howard Hesseman) and Venus Flytrap (Tim Reid) keep things hopping, while levelheaded blonde bombshell receptionist Jennifer Marlowe (Loni Anderson) always manages to smooth over problems.

ireviewnetflix.com rating: **** (Actually 3.5) I have to be honest. When I had seen this show in the past as a kid (my uncle has like a set of WKRP on video) I didn't really enjoy it that much. However, upon watching it now, the show is actually pretty good. The cast is great together, the characters are fun, and the episodes are solid. While the initial concept of a radio station changing it's format to rock and roll being controversial is a little outdated, the episodes are all enjoyable. However, I can't say I really understand why the turkey episode is regarded as the greatest of the series and one of the greatest in television history, according to TVGuide. My only two complaints are 1) The packaging: the DVDs came in two separate slim DVD cases with Discs 1 and 2 in one slim case and Disc 3 in a separate slim case. Just weird. And B) I like being able to hit "next chapter" and be taken past the intro and to the beginning of the episode, not to the second act of the episode. This is a common complaint I have with the structure of some DVDs. Other than those two little things, the show itself is very solid and enjoyable and I look forward to the release of the second season. As for the people complaining about the music, get over it! I was more than able to enjoy the episodes without the original music.
