{television} heroes; season one (2006)

This sci-fi action saga follows a global group of young, everyday people who, in the midst of perfectly normal lives, awake to discover they each have special powers -- from stopping time to reading people's thoughts. The newly minted unlikely superheroes eventually join forces to defeat their mutual foe, who plots to steal their super-DNA and destroy the world. Dave Semel ("American Dreams," "Beverly Hills, 90210") directs the series pilot.

ireviewnetflix.com rating: *** Why was this the great new show of the season? It's pacing was wicked slow at times and it took me quite awhile to get into it and even then I didn't get that into it. It was an all right show, but it just took me awhile to get into it and even when I was into it I wasn't that hooked and felt that I could have missed the show and not felt like I missed that much. The only addictive and slightly interesting part of the show is Masi Oka's Hiro Nakamura storyline as he's just such a cute character. Hayden Panettiere's Claire Bennet storyline was also interesting. However, the other character's storylines are just marginally interesting. It was wonderful to see the truly magnificent Malcolm McDowell again. The last episode of the season was the biggest disappointing as it didn't live up to the hype and was a big letdown. I don't know if I'll be in any rush to check out the second season.

spot-on....NBC's overhyping of this show has been truly nauseating. I used to watch "Sliders" with roughly the same level of enthusiasm, and that was hardly a classic. Although /tv creators and execs today grew up with Star Wars and Spielberg, TV sci-fi really hasn't improved much since "The Icredible Hulk."
