{television} buffy the vampire slayer; season five (2000)

In her fifth, wildly successful season as a vampire slayer living in a normal human world, Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) still can't catch a break. Amid her mother's (Kristine Sutherland) tragedy, Buffy must contend with undead villains, a hell goddess whose ability to reenter her dimension depends on Buffy's sister, Dawn (Michelle Trachtenberg), and her own messy love life. Vampire fighting isn't easy.

ireviewnetflix.com rating: **** This season almost lost me and my interest in what used to be an incredibly addictive series and one of my favorite shows ever on television, but the magic of the first couple of season was almost gone by this point and only a few episodes really caught my attention and held it. It became too story-arc generated and stopped being about great individual episode stories and focused too much on Dawn being the Key and the big bad this season: Glory. I was just really disappointed. Plus, Michelle Trachtenberg was just annoying.

So -- you think Dawn was annoying -- I disagree with this conclusion made by Dawn's critics.

Dawn has a sister who's a slayer, her mother has a brain tumor, she finds out she's a mystical Key, a Hellgod wants to use her to open all the dimensions, her mother dies, a Hellgod tries to kidnap her and then succeeds, she is cut open so her blood will open a dimensional tear and her sister dies to save her life.

If you ask me, I think Dawn has a right to be a little annoying.

I agree that Dawn's character was annoying. However, I don't think it was really Michelle Trachtenberg's fault. I have read that the script was originally done with Dawn's character being much younger -- more at the age where behaviors like the screaming of "Get out! Get out! Get Out! GET OUT!" in a whiny voice would be more age appropriate. When they cast Michelle it was close to the start of filming and they didn't re-write the scripts to be more age appropriate.
